I understand that school is important and education is important but I feel like there is a huge difference between a healthy amount of challenge in order to do better and being so stressed out about school that you break down and cry. These few pictures will help prove that school makes teenagers lose our minds and our health slowly deteriorate as we further our education.

In this image, a man is on a balance beam trying to balance his brain and heart (education and health).
We could have the flu and still write our assignments only because some teachers have no sympathy and will deduct 15% if late.God forbid our mental health is crushed. We are so exhausted all the time, barely getting any sleep at night due to long hours of homework. We go to school and for the whole eight hours we are there we feel on the verge of having any sort of attack and the only thing keeping us intact is our friends. When we get home all we want to do is sleep but we cant. We stress all the time which leads us to sleep deprivation and a low mental health.

In this image, this young man fell asleep doing his homework. Him falling asleep in his textbooks instead of a bed proves that our health is slowly deteriorating as we further our education.
High school students go to school for roughly 8 hours, and we are doing at least 6+ hours of homework and we need at least 9 hours of sleep for our developing brains, then we may have 0-1 hours for other activities such as eating, bathing, exercise, socializing (which is very important for emotional, mental, and physical health. As well as the development of skills vital to our future career and having healthy romantic relationships among other things). We may not even have enough time for religious activities, hobbies, extra curricular activities, medical care of any kind, chores (also a skill/habit development things that required by many parents). Relaxation and family time is barely heard of. Let alone your parents may or may not pressure you to get a job, or you might need to get one for economic reasons! So you may work a 25 hour work week on top of all this! We get told this is what it is like when you’re older but if you enjoy your job it would not be as bad as we have it. In the end we are only teenagers.

A fresh mind, this image demonstrates that school forms who we are the moment we walk in. If we do not do good on an assignment we are a disappointment and in some cases apparently we do not try hard enough. I believe this leads to failure later in life because we will just think we are just a failure so why try. We all are molded to fit into society's norm the day we start school. Throughout close to 3 years of high school and 9 years of elementary school we have been trying to fit in and change ourselves just to do so. Overall high school is where self-esteem, innocence and dreams go to die. Therefore, high school slowly makes us loose our mind by trying so hard to fit in.

This image shows a colorful child enjoying what life is giving to him compared to a man in a black suit shielding himself from the fun because he has to prioritize his time. Missing out on important things in life, teens are trying to balance so many things but school has to be our top priority. It makes us miss out on fun things that maybe we use to enjoy and now we dont have time to enjoy such things. We have to cancel plans because maybe we got more assignments or maybe work called and wants you to work an 6-8 hour shift after school.
In conclusion, although school is very important it leads to teenagers loosing our mind and the development of mental health issues. The colors of these images are mostly dull which furthers into the thought of everything lacking brightness, supposedly brightness in life. These images help prove that school makes us mental break down.
I really enjoyed your topic and think that it was well thought out since we can all relate to it. One thing I noticed was that in the first image, it also uses colour which can help to prove your point. Everything in it is black or grey except for the heart, which is red. I think that this helps it to stand out which could show that our health is more important. Do you think that teenagers have to choose one or the other (health and education), or is there a way to balance both? Overall I think that you have a great point and your images really help to support it.
ReplyDeleteThank you for your feedback Jennifer! I believe there is a way to balance both health and education but it is hard. When we have hours and hours of homework and we get little to no sleep at night I don't think there is a way around that because we are taught to prioritize our work over everything. Although I do believe there is a way around it, it's just a matter of finding that balance and how to balance it.
DeleteVery good points Kortney! We all know that school can be stressful at times, and I think your blog did a good job at capturing the impact this can have on students. I find your first image very symbolic, as it represents the struggle students can have when balancing school and the other things in their lives. Jennifer's points on the heart being the only thing in colour also does a great job of further establishing the importance of good health, like you mentioned. Another thing I noticed about the third image is the small use of vibrant colours. One can see the new student at the door, and note the red and green colours, establishing that he is yet to feel the power of stress and disappointment, which one can see in the students sitting at the desks, who are very dull, and represent what can happen to somebody who feels like a failure. Overall, I agree that school is very important, but also believe that the stress of school can lead to serious problem for students. So my question for you is, what do you believe should change in order for school to be more manageable for stressed students?
ReplyDeleteThank you Paige! I believe for school to be more manageable for stressed students the school board should give us a few days to a week off before exam time to study and/or catch up on our sleep. Exam time is very stressful for students and we tend to stay up very late studying for every class. If they could not provide us the week off before exams maybe a day off in-between exam days would help us manage our stress as well!
DeleteWell written, Kortney Paige Pavloff. All of your points were true and relatable, explaining the struggle that we as students go through. I especially like the first picture, because balancing your education and health is very tough to balance, specifically around exam time when everything is piling up on you and there just isn't enough time to successfully complete homework and studying as well as being active and getting enough sleep. School and education are incredibly important, however I strongly agree with you that there is a huge difference between a healthy amount of challenge/work, and being so piled up with work that you stress about it all the time and break down. Do you think that the elimination of homework and essays piling on top of each other would contribute to a healthier student?
ReplyDeleteThank you Natalie for your feedback! I do believe that the elimination of homework and assignments that are all assigned at the same time would lead to a healthier student! I believe this because we are always piled with assignments before exams, known as 'crunch time' if our teachers chose a different time or eliminated this time in general I believe we would be healthier happier students!
DeleteI enjoyed reading your essay Kortney I thought it was a very good topic because we are all in school and all have those problems that you brought up. I thought the way you described how much time we use to work on school away from school was interesting. It really shows how much time people spend on school when they are in school and how little time they have to do anything else that is important . I really liked the picture of the the little tree being forced into the classroom with all the other carved out blocks of wood. I thought that picture showed that school carves people everyday to be what they want us be people just want to be themselves and not have to worry about school the whole time and turn into some crazy school nerd. I also like the way you were saying throughout the essay that school is important because it is important but I do not believe that it should be dictating what we do and how we socialize with people and when we get to do things we want to do like hobbies and other things. And I agree that it would all be good for our mental health to not have to go home and do 5 hours of homework every night and wake up everyday sleep deprived.
