Muslims: Not Terrorists, but Peacekeepers

Muslims: Not Terrorists, But Peacekeepers

Over the past decade people have associated the word Muslim with terrorist or extremist. Muslims are the followers of the religion Islam. Many people think that all Muslims are terrorists that like to blow stuff up and like to suicide bomb in public places because of the man named Osama Bin Laden, leader of al-Qaeda who lead some Muslims to perform these acts.  The truth is not all Muslims followed him and not all Muslims are therefore terrorists but are peacekeepers.

The actions of Muslims during a catholic church mass in Egypt are an excellent example of how Muslims are peacekeepers. The image (right) shows a long line of Muslims standing side by side protecting the catholic church during mass from rioters who want to destroy the church. The Muslims faces show that they are calm and believe in what they are doing. The attitude and facial expressions shown are calm. Calm is not associated with violent terrorists but rather of peacekeepers. This shows that the Muslims are in fact peacekeepers who are using a non-violent way of protecting the church. The image shows a clear understanding of how not all Muslims are terrorists but are peacekeepers that will protect other people’s religion.

In another example, Muslims show peacekeeping by again protecting another religion by risking their lives. In January 2011, there were riots taking place in Egypt and with the riots there were bombings at multiple buildings by extremists. Trying to prove that not all Muslims are extremists and terrorists, the image (Left) shows Muslims acting as body shields for the Coptic Christians that are attending Christmas mass after a Coptic church was just bombed by extremists.  Muslims are showing acts of being peacekeepers by standing in front of the Christians who are at Christmas mass and holding up the cross and other religious items to support them and shield them from the terrorists and extremists. The contrast and attitude of the Muslims and the items they are holding show that they are keeping peace in a non-violent way.

In comparison to the Muslims protecting Christians during mass in Egypt in a non-violent way,Muslims show themselves as peacekeepers again, this time in Kenya. In December 2015, a terrorist group known as al-Shabaab attacked a bus filled with Muslims and Christians. Members of the terrorist group came aboard and asked the Muslims to give up the Christians for them to execute them but, the Muslims did nothing and protected the Christians by not

giving away anybody to the terrorist group. The image (right) shows a man holding a poster that says "No To Brutal Death". The
colour and boldness of the poster shows the importance of the message they are conveying. They are conveying that they are not supporting the violent act of executing Christians. They are being peacekeepers. The amount of people around the man shows how many Muslims do not believe in being terrorists or extremists. Not all Muslims believe in brutal death and killing people in the name of their god. The Muslims show an act of peace by not giving up the Christians on the bus and fighting back against the terrorist group in a non-violent way by not giving up the Christians on the bus.

"Muslims protect Oslo Synagogue with human ring of peace"
PBS. Feb 27 2015. Jan 10 2016
Like the first example of Muslims protecting a Christian church from rioters, Muslims in Norway protect Oslo Synagogue with a human ring of peace. The image (left) shows a large group of Muslims protecting the main synagogue in Norway from other Muslims that believe in being extremists. Muslims in the foreground are showing peace by protecting the Jews in the background by creating a ring called a human ring of peace from the other Muslims that have attacked other Jewish locations and have killed many Jews in Norway. Peacekeeping is shown with the Muslims creating the human peace ring and defending the church in a non-violent way from extremists.

In conclusion, most Muslims are not terrorists or extremists, but are in fact peacekeepers.

  1. I think that this is a very interesting topic, I wouldn't have thought that Muslims would do these things for Christians without your essay. I liked how your essay captured the idea of Muslims standing up for others, but you could also have included how Muslims are being harmed and mistreated by terrorist groups like Isis in their own country. This is a good overall essay though, good job m8.

  2. I think that your topic is very relatable to this day and age especially with all the racism around the world about people thinking that all Muslims are terrorists and bad people. This topic should be shown to all people around the world to show that Muslims are human beings like everyone else instead of people dehumanizing them. great topic, good writing all around great blog good job

  3. I think this is a great topic to write about in 2015. So many people have become racist and xenophobic from events recent and older that it's refreshing to see the other side. Especially the second point, plenty believe that they are only interested or care about their own religion and will fight to the death for it, when it's generally an accepting religion. 10/10 topic Kyle
